'Insolita lex sed lex' (strana legge ma è sempre legge), si potrebbe dire: secondo una graduatoria pubblicata dal Times online, i codici dei vari paesi abbondano di norme insolite, e in certi casi, al limite dell'assurdo.
In Gran Bretagna, appiccicare il francobollo sulla busta con la testa del monarca alla rovescia è considerato un atto di tradimento. A Miami, in Florida, c'é una apposita legge che proibisce l'uso degli skateboard nelle stazioni di polizia.
Sempre in Florida una donna non sposata che fa paracadutismo di domenica rischia il carcere mentre nel Vermont una donna che vuole mettersi la dentiera deve chiedere l'autorizzazione del marito.
Alcune leggi sono di tutta evidenza recenti. In Salvador, ad esempio, il codice penale prevede addirittura la fucilazione per gli automobilisti ubriachi e nell'emirato del Bahrein un medico può esaminare le parti intime di una donna solo attraverso uno specchio.
Altre invece risalgono chiaramente a parecchi secoli fa, come quella che il Times colloca al numero uno nella classifica delle stranezze: la testa di una balena morta trovata sulle coste della Gran Bretagna appartiene al re mentre la coda è di proprietà della regina, nel caso abbia bisogno per farsi fare un busto.
